I have been on a 3 month plan and would like to change it to a one month plan as we are going away for 6 months the end of October. I have a balance enough for the one month plan, but not for the previous 3 month plan and I am unable to do so on my acct page, just does not accept the change and now my phone is not working

Plans that are expired can not be changed in self serve. you need to get the mod to change the plan manually for you. Send them a prvate essage with the plan you like.

just a fyi plans can be expired for max 90 days after taht your account sim card etc become invalid. So you will need to renew a plan while you are away before the 90 days, if you want to keep your existng number. I would reccomend futuredating a 30 day text only plan (its the cheapest) once you get you plan going this month. while you are away day 85 activate the text only plan and futuredate a plan that you like when you return just incase the prices go up.
