HI@jack4614 you can still use US roaming

For voice, T-Mobile still has its 2G network which PM roaming can use . So, you can buy US roaming, and then select T-Mobile as the network, your phone will use it's 2G for voice and it's LTE for data

of course, you can also just buy data roaming and use VoIP all like Fongo or TextNow to make voice calls. If you are using only Data roaming, you can choose either AT&T or T-Mobile when you are there

If you are planning to go USA after February 2022, you probably won’t be able to make or receive calls. AT&T will decommission 3G.

To make or receive VoLTE calls, Public Mobile need to enable VoLTE.
When you make calls with Public Mobile SIM, your phone fall back to 3G to make the call. If 3G is not available call don't work.

I can confirm you can’t make or receive call where 3G is not available in Canada.
Internet is working but not calls.
I recently went to Réserve faunique La Vérendrye, QC. Calls on Bell and Videotron were working with VoLTE but not Public Mobile.

Why do so many people keep assuming change is "the end of Public Mobile"?

Telus is certainly not coming to an end anytime soon. They've done major network upgrades before, they'll do them again - there's always some awkward transition and tons of marketing hype and a few dissatisfied customers who "will never come back" - but for the most part, customers don't have to worry about anything except when it's time to buy a new phone. And Telus certainly isn't going to cut the rope on about a million Public Mobile subscribers, they've already invested and secured that revenue so there's no way they'll cast it all out into the wild again where they (and all their competitors) can claw and scrabble in claiming it (back) for themselves.

Public Mobile will provide VoLTE when it's cost-effective for them to do so. Which basically means the increased operating/licensing costs for VoLTE access will be less than the subscriber revenue they'd lose by not providing it. There's probably no fixed schedule for this service upgrade, it'll happen when it's necessary, they'll proudly advertise the service nonstop when it boldly launches but they won't commit to any solid promises about it before the decision must be made.

The other thing to consider is that PM and Koodo pre-paid share a back-end system. I doubt Telus is willing to write off both of those sets of customers.

@Anonymous

I fail to see where your response covers the OP's question. What does he/she do if AT&T does not have 3G any more?

@Korth

@srlawren

@ and every one else.

Telus was mandated by the CTRC to offer low price mobile service. So I don't see Public leaving. There is a market for their prepaid platform. They are good and fair. I have had issues and they have always been resolved to my satisfaction.

For some reason I have never liked Koodo....just because of that blue annoying mascot that used to advertise on TV!! lol.

But let's think about it...the Telus shop near me has Koodo too .... does that Koodo shop sell prepaid....it would be either NO or if yes, there is no doubt in my mind they would steer you as hard as possible to go with Koodo or Telus post paid with contract. Those brands would not be in a shop unless the shop and sales people can make a sweet commission...and check out the cars they drive.

When I had a Telus prepaid account(s) we decided to get smartphones and relieve ourselves of those trusty old flip phones that the batteries lasted for days and were horrible to text from. So I find an Android Smart Phone (that today, is hard for me to admit 🙂 ) London Drugs is out of stock and I preferred to not drive to Best Buy. So I go to the local Telus franchised store and was offered help and say I am looking for a new phone....so now the agism of the sales person comes out and she offers me a flip phone. So you now how I am feeling sort of peed off. So I go to the phone I want and was going to ask for a price match and was only a few dollars more so I did not ask. So off the the cashier and...let's activate for you....no thanks I can do my self on the phone with Telus.....well wether you do or not there is a $50 activation fee (on the $104 phone). So two astounded sales people with mouths wide open watch me leave the shop. So off I go to one of my first ever online buys. It was a Friday and I bought the smart phones from Best Buy....Monday there were in my mail box. How that happened so fast...I don't know and shipping was free.

So the moral of my story I am not interested in the prices, the commissions, and some of the money grabbing fees.

So I will stick with PM Online only!! There is a market for good basic service. And actually it is friendly and trustworthy.

The question is if the OP's statement is correct and when you buy the USA add on and you have the choice of two carriers to roam with for best reception...what is PM going to do to resolve the loss of the one carrier that drops 3G? And no doubt they already know and are working on it.

None of the Telus brand prepaid services have access to VOLTE. My takeaway from an oracle PM chat was that the Prepaid services are on a different platform than postpaid services (ie and Android and IOS) this means implementing VOLTE would need to be done twice, once for each platform. Will it happen , when and how we don't know. When the time comes that 3g is not available it probably will be easier to migrate ppl to Koodo postpaid rather than investing and implemting volte. This is what happened earlier in the year with one of the towns in Western Canada.

It's an accounting practice.

If anything, a dedicated postpaid system would be more complicated than a dedicated prepaid system because it needs to fully integrate credit approvals, credit transactions, and contractual agreements which are (so far) "optional" features of prepaid service. "3G" and "VoLTE" are nominal technical standards on paper, they're practical marketing standards in the real world, but they're only peripheral elements of billing and accounting services which should more properly concentrate on other things.

If Public Mobile does indeed disappear and force refugee migration to Koodo simply because Telus is too much of a corporate dinosaur to adapt their accounting practices to the real world ... then I will go somewhere else where they can figure out how to make things actually work properly. Why should I trust Telus to be ethical or competent with one of their subsidiaries after they completely fail and blunder me out of another?

From the lack of marketing activity and promo in the past year, I really convinced that Telus does not have a very bright plan for PM's future. However, I don't think it is Telus' own decision. Afterall, PM is always a market follower rather the a leader within the tier 3 providers. So.. To fold or not to fold, it is the question. I think it is a joint decision of all 3 big players

PM has made tons of improvements in the past couple years. they've been leading the pack with newer plans and better promos. I don't really see them shutting down.

T-Mobile and at&t both have volte on prepaid... it's going to depend on whenever Telus decides to disable the filter.

The perfect reward to help you share the spirit of the season.

At Public Mobile, we’re all about giving. So we want to give you another reason to refer a friend to us. Between December 1, 2021, and December 31, 2021, refer a friend and we’ll take $5 off your payment every 30 days for six months as long as they stay with us. See details below.

this should tell you their plan for the future. I think we get volte in April after the T-Mobile 3g shutdown. pm needs to increase the throttle limit though. I can already tell volte won't be a success without it. the lte connection with the 3mb throttle is too inconsistent... it needs to have a buffer and 3mb can't provide it.

@gpixel

VoLTE is a separate bandwidth share dedicated for talk. It can be managed separately from primary data provision. There's really no reason a provider (like Public Mobile) can't support VoLTE on a VoLTE-capable network while also supported throttled LTE-based data - aside from the arbitrary business decision to not do so. They might cite technical complications, but these are really just artificial obstructions which could be implemented differently if they really decided to make it happen.

It is August 2022; the US turned off 3G. I have a plan with US ROAMING included and a Pixel 6 pro. No VoLTE is available. I am not able to use public mobile anymore. No solution was offered. Only sorry. Means: That's it for our relationship. Unfortunately.

I can't. There is no T-Mobile in Alaska. AT&T would be available, but the phone doesn't let me connect. "AT&T is unavailable." Full reception.
