so if I order the USA data add on it will start automatically unlike the old system where you put in a start date in, if I remember correctly

It starts as soon as you load it successfully and last for 240 hours (or 10 Days) Only works whilst in USA.

edit..Your data is limited to the amount you buy...but still only available for up to 240 hours.

Correct. US add-on starts immediately after purchase. Ideally will be to purchase it close to the border.
