I'm trying to get some info on Wifi calling with public mobile. I came across this in the help section....."Using calling apps when connected to Wifi" It says there's no charge for this but what is it? Thanks.

@slamdunk58 There is no Wifi Calling for PM

if you need Wifi calling (or VoLTE), you will have to check with Koodo or Telus

There's wifi calling and then there's calling on wifi.

Wifi calling is via the provider and would use your number and lets you make calls while on wifi and not cell (why bother on cell). Public doesn't offer this.

Calling on wifi is using separate voice over internet protocol (VoIP) apps that have their own number. These apps can be used on either wifi or cell data.

Thanks for the reply. Why would they say it's free to use this app on public mobile? The two things have nothing to do with each other. That's like saying it's free to use a word document on your phone that has a public mobile sim card in it! I have the talktone app on my phone. Why would public mobile think that I would think it would cost me money to use that on my public mobile account?

Some of the apps have charges or cost for "premium plans" or extra minutes, or to save the number permanently, etc etc. but yeah it is kind of redundant.

@slamdunk58 Where you see it said free to use the app (and you meant TextNow?)?

People on the Community here are customers like you. I guess some people here just suggesting you can use TextNow for free. But if you meant Wifi Calling from the provider, then NO, this is not a feature/service on PM.

The context of that information is that it doesn't eat limited minutes to use voip apps to access voicemail. Using regular cell would.

I think the wifi calling providers do somehow use minutes but I'm not sure.

PM is a tier 3 provider for Telus family. I guess Telus try to make sure the 3 have clear but different target markets

Telus: full service with full price, try to have people to bundle up other home service.

Koodo: full service will less the price, targeting mid-range plans, limited internet service as well

PM: ONLY Basic service targeting the lower price plan

Thanks Dust2dust. I'm aware of the distinction. So why does public mobile state on they're website "Using calling apps when connected to Wifi" is free? It's like THEY don't know the difference!

Them saying "calling apps" is entirely generic. They're just saying that it's a way to check voicemail without using cell minutes. They're not using the marketing buzzword "wifi calling".

I think Lucky Mobile is the only tier 3 that offers real Lucky App calling, but it still not Wifi Calling

Thanks softech. The line "Using calling apps when connected to Wifi" didn't come to me from someone in the community, it came from public mobile's website! I don't understand why that line is on there? It can only confuse people!

It didn't say anything about accessing voice mail. Just "Using calling apps when connected to Wifi" is free. That statement really doesn't make any sense. It's downright confusing and should be removed from public mobile's web site. I doubt it will be though. Oh well. Thanks for your help.

Oh you're right. I was looking at it as a left right thing. So yes the column about not using minutes. At least this is where I found the line you quoted. It's still just a generic idea of not using minutes.
