I keep on getting calls from “*” (asterisk)

I am receiving multiple calls a day from *. When I try to call back there is nothing. When I answer there is also nothing.
Does anyone know what’s going on?

* isn't a valid phone number. Using computer software, callers can often make the call display show anything they wish. The information might have been corruptwd durung the call connection process, but it's also possible that this was done to hide where they are calling from.
