Data being used up by auto updates

all data being used up by an auto update on daily (or twice daily) update. Everything I can think of us turned off for cell data usage. Any ideas what’s causing this? Shows up in bill as “web” usage.

@John-vg hi you have to turn off auto updates in your settings for data what type of phone?

@John-vg That web usage could just might be MMS being sent or received which gets recorded on the usage but doesn't actually use any of your plan/add-on data.

Do you actually see your data usage change in the overview page under My Data/Add-ons when you see this web usage traffic? Also is your background data disabled?

@John-vg My android phones have a setting that only allows updates to be done over wifi. Maybe look for that on phone.

If you're on an iPhone, you could try:

Settings>Cellular>Cellular Data Options>Low Data Mode> ON
Apple's description:

"Low Data Mode helps reduce cellular data usage. When Low Data Mode is turned on, automatic updates and background tasks, such as Photos syncing, are paused"

Yes the auto update is turned off. It’s an iPhone 6s. I’ve just turned off the iCloud Drive, I’m thinking that may have been the culprit

Yes, it is using minimal amounts of data for every instance (.20 mg, .87mg, .06mg). I’ve just turned off the iCloud Drive, maybe that is the culprit...?

Thank you, I will check, but believe that was already off. Just turned off the iCloud Drive, maybe that was doing this

See @dabr post above. It is the 5 MB buffer from turning your phone/data being turned on on/off. In usage history data type = web. This is normal. Your phone will call to the public mobile data server. This is to enable mms on your phone

It might also help to turn off wifi assist (settings --> cellular --> toggle wifi assist) if it's on. Basically, that feature uses your data when your wifi signal is weak/unstable. You can also turn off cellular data at the app level for apps that you know you'll never need data for.

In my case, I just keep cellular data turned off altogether until i need it. iOS have had a history of chewing through data randomly so not going to risk it. However, this also means you wont be able to get MMS (picture messages, etc) so if you're expecting any, it might be a good idea to toggle it on every now and then

when text messages are being sent through iMessage, it uses data. your usage data looks like that's the culprit

disable these settings to help with data consumption

Disable apps auto update
iTunes & App Stores > Turn Off Use Cellular / Mobile Data

Disable background data
Go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh > Turn it Off entirely or by selective Apps

Disable iCloud sync
Go to Settings > Cellular / Mobile Data > Turn Off iCloud Drive

Disable Wifi Assist
Go to Settings > Cellular / Mobile Data > scroll to bottom > Wi-Fi Assist > turn OFF

Disable data on certain apps
Go to Settings > Cellular > Scroll through and disable applications you don't want to used your Cellular Data

If you have an Android phone, you might check the apps under Settings and uncheck any that have mobile and background data enabled.

On my phone I have to go into my data settings and turn off ' allow background data' on all the apps separately. And if they do get updated over wifi, sometimes it resets and I have to change this setting again. So sneaky
