@will13am This is an excellent suggestion. For exactly this reason, we do actually have 500 extra minutes on each of our phones - for times when your kid talks to his friend for nearly two hours while they play Minecraft together (to pick a random example 😄.)

So, the consensus is that the minutes are renewed close to midnight at the start of the day when the money comes out of the account - whether it is a few hours before or after this seems to depend on just where you are in the country.

Thanks everybody for your quick responses!
Billing Cycle vs payment

My question is: "when, relative to the autopay payment does the 30-day billing cycle start"

My guess is that the day of the payment is the first day of the 30-day cycle. We just ran out of out 100 minutes on the el cheapo plan, primarily because somebody made a 56 minute call on what appears to be the first of the 30 days. The recent payments info shows:

Jul 29, 2020 100 Minutes Canada-Wide Talk
Jul 29, 2020 30-day plan
Jul 29, 2020 Automatic Top-Up

The 56 minute call was made on the 29th and appears to use minutes from the current cycle (we got a text saying that we have only 10 minutes left in the plan.) What is the actual first day of the plan given the above payment info? Is it the 29th or the 28th? Can somebody confirm this?
