As long Telus (PM's parent company) has a prefix in the same rate centre as your SaskTel number, you should be able to port no problem, as long as you keep the SaskTel account active, as it will be cancelled for you as part of the porting process to Public Mobile.

I consult this site to see which areas have prefixes served both by SaskTel Mobility and TELUS Mobility, is a good bet it will be OK. You might have an issue with a location such as Climax ( 😆 ) that TELUS does not have a local rate centre.

http://cnac.ca/co_codes/co_code_status.htm

What is the prefix? (Next 3 numbers after 306). I can try to give you a good idea. I believe there is an option to check if the number is 'eligible' for porting from step 2 in the signup process. Normally, I would have also been able to check via the checker from my own self-serve account but automated porting is disabled due to maintenance at this time. I am presented this text which you can try before activating if you like to inquire definitively about a specific number:

"To transfer your number from another provider, please reach out to a moderator through our chat bot. To complete your port-in request, please open our chatbot via this link bit.ly/2GF1pHW and type in “port request”. This will put you in touch with our moderator team."

You're making a good move to Public Mobile in Saskatchewan - a primary deciding factor for me was the fact that Telus, Koodo, and Public Mobile coverage is provided by SaskTel Mobility's infrastructure in this province, so you'll have exactly the same reliability and coverage as you're used to. (Save for the data throttled to 3mbps)

And yes - you will need to buy a new SIM card from Public Mobile, as they are carrier specific. The SaskTel SIM will not be usable after porting.

It is rare, but sometimes a new customer has no service on PM nor on their old carrier if activation and transfer both have glitches.

You can port that number, usually if you're porting your number during activation for the first time. The main thing you'd need is your account number, if your account is showing for your current provider. Secondly, you need a public mobile sim card to use the service. Lastly, yes when the porting is complete with no problems your old provider Sasktel will shut down automatically.
