Texting a picture.

So I think I did it correct. iPhone to Android I sent a text of a few words, some emojis, and a pic. I turned my data on then sent the text.

This is is the first time I have turned on my data since my account was refreshed for the next 30 days.

I am not worried about the usage as I have never used up all my 250mb. But I thought this type of text does not count against your Data usage??

Account shows I used.

Phone shows I used.

@LurganIeUk From what I understand MMS does not use up your data. It could have been backround running apps, Location services, Or you using Imessage.

@LurganIeUk I would disable Imessage when using data. Try sending another message with it disabled. Thanks.

@LurganIeUk Oh yes @BearFBI is right it does not use any of your data allotment just check your background apps that they’re not updating while you were on Data

@LurganIeUk Yeah even if you disable backround apps there could be still things in the backround using up your data. Like your IPhone talking to apple servers. Its just the way a phone works. There is nothing you can do. It initially happens when you first turn your data on. But its so little usage i wouldn't worry.

I use an android and when I send long messages it takes a bit of data to send it or else it will sit there and say not sent. This is not a Public Mobile problem. This is how your phone is trying to optimize the speed the message is sent it will boost the message to send it.

@LurganIeUk As was mentioned, MMS don't "eat" data, but a bit data used is because your phone eventually connects to some servers, like Apple/Samsung/etc or still some apps doing their work.

@LurganIeUk I understand this but there are still way more things going on in that phone. From communicating to apple servers to getting the latest date and time from time servers. There are loads of things that happen. Its just the way a phone works. Its only a very small percentage of data used anyway.

Texting a picture is MMS which by default uses your cellular data. This has been the case since 2G networks existed. If you are sending a picture from an iPhone to a non-iPhone user it will consume your plan data as they are not the same phone companies. If your data wasn't turned on the picture will not go through.

This is where iMessage and RCS messaging come in as the text message is not sent via regular text messaging but is transmitted through apple's server(iMessage) or Samsung or Google's server (RCS messaging) therefore can be sent via wifi. But keep in mind still that it will only not affect your data if it's iphone to iPhone or android (with RCS) to android(with RCS)

There is the 5mb buffer that is taken when you turn your data on (which resets)but chances are the minor data usage from that act is being used by your OS.Its the only "app" that you cannot turn background data usage off. I always find data usage listed by the OS in my phone when no other data has been used. Android core apps is the only one that I allow background data usage and it will list small amounts of mobile data usage.

@LurganIeUk Whoops....sorry I should go back to you quicker. Airplane mode resets the buffer data....did it reset your data? (You only need it on for a minute or so...) Then check your data usage in your account.

Thanks. There is no difference. It is not a big deal as I never use all 250mb any ways. But to say sending a pic over text and as a prerequisite you have to turn on data and it won’t affect your data usage is not true.
