I joined PM about 2 weeks ago and my only regret is not joining sooner!

This are the steps I did to move over to Public Mobile, I hope it helps -

I had a SIM card that I got from ebay for about 5$ several months ago. You can buy SIM cards from ebay, amazon, PM site, or from local retailers like Walmart and TMS.

Once you have the SIM card at hand, go to activate.publicmobile.ca. It will ask for your SIM card number (this is the long 19digit number, not the phone number) and fillup the questions. You also have the option of getting a new phone number or porting in an existing number.

I wanted to transfer / port in my voipms number. I printed out my voipms billing statement and on the PM website started to do the port in. I made sure that the information requested matches my voipms billing statement. After 3 business days, the port in is successful.

Also be on the lookout for promotions as from time to time, Public Mobile have promotions for new activations. There were no promotions ongoing when I signed up. But I was able to get a referral which gives 10$ credit on the next billing cycle. I also signed up for autopay which gives another 2$ credit.

Hope that helps!
