How can a visitor get connected? Is it just a matter of going to a retail store, buying a SIM card and then activating (no proof of physical address or any other barriers)?

You can but a sim at a retailer or online through PM or Amazon.ca. If you want automatic payment then you would need a credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, American Express) and Visa Debit cards that have been issued by Canadian or American financial institutions and are associated with addresses in Canada or the U.S. You can buy a voucher or make a payment through recharge.com.

@JasonZA Yes, that is correct. Walmart in most cases will supply the sim card free of charge. Just prepay with a voucher to cover renewals for the entire stay and that's it.

Yes you can do it all anonymously like in the movies with "burner phones".

Have unlocked, compatible phone. Buy SIM. Create account using voucher or anonymous unregistered prepaid "credit" card gift card. Use any address. Pick any number.
