I have automatic payment set. If I want to buy an add on can I just buy it and have public mobile take the add on out of the same account? Or do I need to manually deposit money into the account to cover the add on?

You need to load up funds to balance, then purchase the add on.

When you go to purchase the add-on it can take funds from the credit card on file. This only puts money in your Available funds you would then need to go in and "repurchase" the addon you wish to add to your account. Purchasing addons is a two-step process.
