Don't have an iphone but my understanding is that MMS needs data on. But it won't count against your data limit.

I am unable to send or receive MMS texts from my iPhone unless my data is turned on (or if I use iMessage to send to someone who also has an iPhone). Is there a way around this?

MMS uses unmetered mobile data. If this connection is disabled, MMS cannot be sent. It is that simple. There is no way around it.

The way I set it up for my kids phones is turn data on, then go lower in the cellular settings and toggle off all apps and everything for data except "phone" and that way nothing will be allowed to use data except that. I also put find my iPhone on incase they lose their phone!
