Need a quick course on texting

I have agreed to set up and deliver an iPhone 4s to someone who self-describes as a Luddite. The person is a senior, is trying to run a small business and is experiencing domestic issues. The person only wants talk + text for now. The phone has been factory reset, unlocked and set up.

Because I do not text (I am an even older senior), I don't know if Apple's message app (green square with a white talk bubble) is all that's needed to text both Apple and android devices or if I need to download another app.

Any advice is greatly appreciated. There is some urgency as the person's existing plan is about to expire.

Yes, that's all that is needed.

You can test it out by sending a text to yourself. It will appear as outgoing and incoming in your text history.

The only info you need is the recipient's phone number.
