Emergency Alerts

I was out to dinner with my spouse and a few people around us were commenting that they received an "emergency alert" on their phone. It stated that a Tornado watch was in affect for the Ottawa area.

Later I was talking to my mother and she said she had gotten the alert on her phone. That all carriers are supposed to send out "Emergency Alerts" I recall in June there was supposed to be a province wide test of the system.

On both occasions, I did not receive a notification. I was with Telus in June when the first alert was tested and now I am with Pm.

What is the policy/procedure for this? Are we all supposed to get some sort of notification?

I have been with PM through the whole testing time and did receive the test messages.

Also with PM for the last 20 months or so. Never got a test. But I did get about 3 or 4 blasts when that child went missing outside of Thunder Bay. That was quite the wakeup for something I could do nothing about.

So far, this is still a hit and miss situatioh.

I recalled those times. Between myself and few other friends, we had Bell, Rogers, Koodo and Freedom/Wind. Not all of us got the alerts. Even friends from same carrier, one got it and the other never got it.

I did not receive the Ontario test messages on my then Nexus 5, but I didn’t expect to get the messages as my device was not officially supported.

i did receive 3 of 4 English and French alerts for an Amber Alert in a Northern Ontario area earlier this year just after the tests, on that Nexus 5.

the alerts I’m speaking about were the ones like you would here on the radio or TV that really get your attention.

Sometime earlier this week I got a severe weather alert without sound in Brant County, SW Ontario, on my LG q6.

Your phone needs to be WPA-compatible wireless devices using Cell Broadcast distribution protocol.

Check your phone with the following lists sorted by provider.

@Kris_marieNot sure about your phone, but I can change my emergency alert settings.

Instructions for my andriod.

"Step 1: Open the “Messages” app.

Step 2: Tap the icon in the upper right corner (three dots).

Step 3: Tap on “Settings”.

Step 4: Select “Emergency alert settings”."

You will also need to be connected to LTE - 3G speeds are fine, but as long as you are showing LTE on your cellular connection, you should be receiving the alerts.

Nice! We are the winners. Custom ROMS are the only way to go. I am using LineageOS. It seems to be pretty similar except missing the "Show channel 60 broadcasts from India" I have the other ones but had to scroll down or change screen resolution / font size sorry lol.

What is the 0.41K/s app to the left of your bluetooth?

@RobertQc Oh, that's the "Display network speed" setting in the Status Bar area on Oxygen. It's a "live" display of the data (wifi or mobile, whichever is active at the time) transmitting or receiving at the moment.

Thanks, after a quick search on this "LineageOS does not natively support status bar network speed indication, while many other custom ROMs do." I will look into switching to Oxygen, seems to have more features than Lineage. Good info.

@RobertQc what hardware are you on? I don't know if you can run OxygenOS on non-OnePlus hardware or not.

SHAMU - Nexus 6S... I guess this is why I went with LineageOS. I think the closest to Oxygen is ASOPA Paraniod Andriod? I also have a Galaxy Active S7 that I love with all my heart but it supports 0 custom roms so its just an unused back-up / just in case device that collects dust. I need to get a new phone sigh.

@RobertQc sorry I can't really tell you what would be closest to OxygenOS, as I've only very breifly dabbled in custom ROM land, trying to resurrect my useless 1st gen (2012) Nexus 7 tablet. With the stock ROM, it gets completely bogged down within a day or so of factory resetting and becomes basically unusable. I dabbled with a couple of custom ROMs but they all had various issues which to be honest I no longer remember as I just gave up and it's now collecting dust in a drawer. I should actually reset it again and take it to the electronics recycling depot, come to think of it.

But other than that I've yet to have a need to use a custom ROM on any of my Android devices to date (1st gen Moto X, then OnePlus 3, now OnePlus 5T). All have been very close to stock Android experience (by design, I've avoided the Samsungs and LGs etc of the world like the plague due to dislinking their software), so I've yet to find a need.
