I really think using T-mo's network going forward makes much more sense for the combined entity. Just about everywhere else in the world sits on an LTE + UMTS/HSPA [+ GSM optionally] stack, so it offers up more handset availability, probably more network equipment for ongoing expansion and maintenance, etc etc.

With T-Mobile merging with Sprint sometime by the end of the year wonder how that will bother our roaming. Heard they are keeping T-mobile name but moving to Sprint network. Sprint is CDMA not GSM like PM. Will that mean in future will only get AT&T? Would be bad if that happens. Area in US I visit often doesn't have AT&T service only t-mobile. Hope the merger doesn't mean we lose a roaming partner.

From this it looks like they plan to do the opposite;

https://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/how-the-t-mobile-and-sprint-merger-could-affect-customers/

Heard it from a family member in US who swiched to a carrier that uses both Sprint and T-mobile. She asked their customer service to why their new phones only came with Sprint som cards and bring own phone Tmobile. They told her t-mobile network will be no more which is why they stopped offering new GSM phones. Maybe they where wrong .

I think it's time for US carriers using CDMA to get on board the GSM train.
