Network Compatibility

Hi, I'm currently looking into buying a new phone, and am also looking at switching to Public Mobile from Freedom Mobile. The phone I'm looking at is compatible with the following frequency bands:

3G - HSDPA 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100

[vs PM's HSPA 850 / 1900]

4G - LTE band 1(2100), 3(1800), 5(850), 7(2600), 8(900), 20(800), 38(2600), 40(2300), 41(2500)

[vs PM's 700 MHz, 850 MHz, 1900 MHz and 2100 MHz downlink and 1700 MHz uplink (AWS)]

Would I be correct to assume this device would work on both the 3G and 4G networks, or would PM's 1700 MHz uplink cause me trouble with the 4G?

@-Al- Public Mobile works on following frequencies: For 3G use (UMTS/HSPA): 850MHz/1900MHz bands. For 4G/LTE use: 1700MHz/2100MHz bands. For 4G/LTE use: 700 MHz band.

Yes, I've reviewed that thread. The information you've provided here is not entirely consistent with the information at the following link: https://publicmobile.ca/en/on/get-started

For easier reference for our discussion, at that link, it says:

4G LTE and LTE Advanced

700 MHz, 850 MHz, 1900 MHz and 2100 MHz downlink and 1700 MHz uplink (AWS)

HSPA [3G]

850 MHz

1900 MHz (UMTS)

Now, obviously, the info from the website is somewhat consistent with what you provided (700, 1700, 2100 for 4G), but the info you provided doesn't include 850 or 1900 MHz for 4G, as the website does. I would try checking the IMEI, but I don't have the phone yet, and don't intend to buy it if it won't work with the network, and I can't seem to use https://willmyphonework.net - I'm guessing due to the model being too new (released April 2018).

It's fully compatible with the 3G network and partially compatible with the LTE network. Only B5 and B7 will work on LTE. You're missing B12 and B4, which will significantly impact your LTE experience.

Ignore the 2100MHz in your phone's spec sheets. Public Mobile does not use Band I (it isn't used anywhere in Canada). This is the reason my many people take exception to cell phone companies and device manufactuers says "1700/2100MHz" or similar. Band 4 is what you need for the most part for good LTE service (and Band I 2100MHz has nothing to do with that).

In addition, to Bands 2, 4, 5, and 12 or 17 for LTE, Public Mobile also has Band 7 LTE.

You should be fine for voice services and HSPA data services. However, for faster LTE speeds, your phone is lacking LTE Band 4.
