I wonder if the carrier on the receiving end makes a difference. I know that for North America calls, the outcome is identical with or without the + sign. I was successful without the + sign the first time I called. When it didn't work today, I added the + sign to see if it would help. I get an immediate fast busy signal which would suggest to me there is something not right with the sequence. There's no way that the call even left the Public Mobile network.

I am not that experienced with making overseas calls. Anyway, I managed to make a call to the UK last week for the very first time on this account. I tried the same number today and it just won't connect. When I checked my usage log, there was no indication of the call being made. I didn't use the + in front of the numbers. When I do, I get a fast busy signal. Does anyone else have experience with overseas calls. Does adding the + sign work for you? Is overseas calling reliable or iffy like what I am experiencing?

I'm not super up to speed on this as I used to call back to Canada when abroad and not from Canada overaeas but this link may help confirm exactly what to dial. I don't think the + is anything.

https://www.howtocallabroad.com/codes.html

An old thread on the topic:

https://productioncommunity.publicmobile.ca/t5/Plans-Add-Ons/International-calling-dial-pattern/m-p/116723#M12511

We use the format 011 44 xxxx yyyyyy (i.e.10 digits in the phone number) without issue. When you are in the UK the format is 0 xxxx yyyyyy.

The + in front of the number is the same as if you were to dial 011 before the number. Some dialing systems understand either or both. You have to play around with them to see which one works.

You could always use WhatsApp or KakaoTalk to make the call. You can even do a video call. You just need data or WiFi. 🙂

Just to add to what @MEU_21 already mentioned, the + is a universal international call prefix, which can be substituted for digits depending on your location.

For example, a user in Canada dialing UK would need to dial 011 44 xxx. In this case 011 is the international call prefix for Canada (and USA). Alternatively you could dial +44 xxx.

If you were in Germany and wanted to dial the UK, you would dial 00 44 xxx, or alternatively +44 xxx.

The plus sign is a convenient way for the networks to insert the international call prefix to any location without needing to know local dialing rules.

A country code should always follow the plus sign. UK country code is 44. Canada/USA is 1.
