i am thinking is your phone asking you for a network unlock code, if so you need to contact your previous pervider to get that code

As others said, it's key that you tell us what phone you're trying to switch to (make/model), whether it's been known to work with another SIM card, and whether it's unlocked or locked to a specific carrier.

I would suggest troubleshooting in the following order.

1. Does the phone work in general. Is the problem repeatable using a different SIM card.

2. Is the phone compatible with the Public Mobile network. Check using this site. https://willmyphonework.net/

3. Is the phone SIM locked.

Hey! I just had a similar problem with getting my dad set up on his new phone with the same SIM card. I needed to go into the contacts and change his profile phone number, as you should be listed as the top contact (if it is a samsung phone at least), and put in your current phone number in this profile. Then rebooted the phone and BAM! Finally on network. Hope this helps! I think it relates to telling the SIM card that this is the account?

Following the last restart, the phone is recognizing its new number without any further issue.
