Problem with Wifi Hotspot using Samsung Note 3

So I browsed and tried settings here

In the "APN type" part, my phone (Note 3) wasn't given a choice to select or type "dun" (only choice is 'internet' / 'mms' / 'internet + mms')

When I selected GID in the mobile virtual network operator type section along with 4D4F, my phone can no longer connect to the internet.

It's otherwise fine, but I simply couldn't use the phone as hotspot and I do need the hotspot every now and then.

Is it possible for you to create your own APN? All you need to do is copy all the attributes over to a new APN with a different name. Then try adding dun to APN type. Hopefully that will work.

Can't type it in except for the 3 choices given to me.

Are these settings firmware dependent? I'm currently at Android 4.3. Perhaps I should upgrade the phone to get those settings?

I guess your Samsung firmware has restricted manual entries in the APN type box and only allows a restricted pull down menu selection. From my limited experience with helping others troubleshoot their Samsung devices, this is a Samsung thing where they like to impose their own will on their users by imposing restrictions that really don't improve the user experience with their products. It is too bad, you are out of luck.

BTW, I would have thought that your phone would be offered a more updated version of android. According the gsmarena, your phone should at least upgrade to 5.0. You may want to check for software updates just to be sure. This will give you some security updates and a more usable version of android. The update will not necessarily address the APN type restrictions. Not unless Samsung has decided to play nice which I highly doubt.

If wifi hotspot is important to you, it looks like you have to get a replacement phone. The one thing I have not been able to figure out is why certain devices need to have dun in the APN type in order to support wifi tether. I have a Sony xperia z3 compact tablet that is running 6.0.1 and it needs dun. It is the only device that I have owned which needed this workaround.

as @will13am said under normal circumstances Android 5 or I suppose any version of android would allow you to have more access to change your APN settings.

Also there is also the option of rooting your device if absolutly nothing works

Rooting an android device only gives you elevated privileges. Editing the APN is not a function requiring root. So root will solve nothing. You would have to go back to square one, edit the source code to provide additional options for editing the APN, recompile and install on the phone. This is absolutely not possible. TBH, I despise carrier devices because they come with crippled functionality and SIM lock.

As Will was mentioning, root access would not change the current ability or inability to change APNs manually from the regular settings menu.

Root access would allow someone to permanently make changes to the the APN information saved within the phone that would be maintained even after a factory reset. The text contained with the apns.conf.xl could be altered to achieve this effect. However, some ROMs seem to ignore this file, depending on how it has been programmed.

What I meant by root, is more like installing a new ROM, instead of the restricted Telecome Firmware.

Installing unsigned firmware involves unlocking the bootloader, not root. For Samsung firmware, I think odin is the software used to do that.

Edit: Slim rom has support for the note 3. These guys produce a pretty good rom. I have had nothing but good experiences with this rom on numerous devices, nexus 4, nexus 7, one plus one. I think odin is required to install a custom recovery which allows flashing custom roms.

with regards to the comment about Samsung... Samsung may be bad, but Note 3 & 4 was a masterpiece with its extremely smart design.
