There are often mentions in the news about people calling 911 for frivolous reasons.

Yup. Start walking. Stick out that thumb. Maybe there's a house not far. People live out in the boonies.

I think that's an improper use of 911 resources.

This would be a really good sitcom bit, where two friends break down, Naepalm and z10 and we argue over whether we should call 911 or not.

z10: No bro that's irresponsible don't call 911.

Naepalm: But our car is on fire.

z10: You know there are way worse things then this, let's just walk for 200 km

z10: dude don't worry about the bears we will be fine.

When I stated emergency it was not a life and death situation. One should never tie up the 911 lines because their out of gas etc.

Our call takers can’t provide information on the weather, power outages or municipal services. Don’t call 9-1-1 and ask for the non-emergency phone number. Those numbers are located at nonemergency.ca, the front cover of your phone book or you can dial directory assistance (4‑1‑1) to request a number.

911 is for emergencies only. A crime in progress or when life is threatened ex Heart Attack, Burglary, assault, fire, bad vehicle accident.

Not for non life threatening things like a small collision where there’s only a small dent in the car. Call your provinces number (in Ontario it’s 211) for the non emergency number for these things
