@HALIMACS

Our wine budgets must differ greatly.....oracle rewards are a higher end value bottle for me like an all to easy to finish Oyster Bay or a Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc. The odd time I hit your level I might celebrate with bottle of Barefoot bubbly or savour the deep berry blends of an Apothic red. At my usual level I have to stick to the light grassy notes in an Estrella de Pascua Sauvignon Blanc when its on sale. Although this month the rose could be shared by 10%er and a 25%er cut with a little soda water in a tall glass with lots of ice and a slice of orange its a very refreshing spritzer. Or they could try an Argentinian Cabernet/Malbec blend by Recri or pull in a 50%er to go thirds on Australia's Hardy's varietal Chardonnay or a 10 %er and a couple of 25%ers could enjoy De Bortoli's the Astronomer's rich Chardonnay with late summer fruit aromas and a hint of vanilla or a nice 5 year old Spanish Castillo Tempranilla by Victorianas Concilio and marvel at its ruby red lightly acidic berry notes and smooth finish. Fine cheeses and crackers are extra.....

Heck, I found a bottle for $7. It was ... not terrible. It was fine. I guess I'm not any kind of connoisseur. 🙂 Works for my meagre earnings too. 🙂 Unlike the high falutin' HALIMACS over there.

I love an Australian chardonnay so the Astronomer is first on my list along with the tempranillo. Worse case scenario its always good to have a bottle of cooking wine around for a bouillabaisse or a beef bourguinon. Hmmm....it sounds like I know what to make for dinner tonight.

Hey don't get me wrong. I'd happily spend money on a fine wine. But I've found over time that it's just not really worth it when the cheap plonk isn't bad and that it's all the same ethyl alcohol producing buzz.

@Anonymous

Its a little disheartening to see the same $10 to $15 bottle of wine here sells for €1 over in Europe. When I eventually get to visit my sister in Portugal and her new position overseeing the growth of medicinals she will have a slew of suggestions for me to try that cheaper than a bottle of water.

Nova Scotia? I stopped buying the bag o' wine for home when I would get up the next day wondering why we felt so awful to pick up the box that now weighs 3 oz. However the boxless bag does go camping lying flat at the top of the cooler easily visual to the naked eye....and not that naked grape plonk. Mission Hill or Peller Estates sauvignon blanc or dry white will do just fine. They are quite reasonable for an oracle and 5%er couple or a double 1%er couple can afford.

I am not a wine drinker at all. But my parents and brother are. When they go to panama they get a box wine, I think it's 4litres (has four bags in it) and its less than 3$ a box lol. They say its very good and it they wanted to get some of the better ones in bottles its 10$ which they say is the equivalent of a 50$ one here in QC.

@Anonymous

Ok I went wine shopping at the 39th and Cambie liquor store. After drooling over some $8800 bottles of whiskey I bought 5 bottles for $45. Some of the good deals were already sold out but grabbed the Hardy's varietal chardonnay, a Peller Estates and the Buronga Hill sauvignon blanc. And two cabernet sauvignon...The Vinecrafter and one by Beal which was the weekly feature. Saved $13.50 +tax off the regular price that's 25% off!
