If it is an old Telus landline that you are porting over. It will take a couple of days but your old service will continue to work until porting is completed.

Was the Telus Mobility SIM card left in the phone to receive a text message from Telus to reply to that authorized the nubmer transfer? Assuming that was done, you can wait until the Telus service stops working and after that, insert your Public Mobile SIM card into your phone. If you've already inserted your Public Mobile SIM card, trying restarting your device.
