New year, new Community look!

Hey Community,

We are excited to announce that, as of today, we’ve updated our Community! You’ll notice that all the discussions and posts you’ve had in the past will still be on the Community, but that the way you used to find certain things may be different. Once you become familiar with the changes, we hope that you will be able to find answers to your questions that much faster.

We would like to provide a big shout-out to @WearySky, @CaNuCk07, @TheOldVR, @NDesai, @Watoko, @stonechucker, @awesomeness, @Luddite, @srlawren, @imm1304, @youbme, and @homer for providing their suggestions on how we can improve the Community in our Public Lab. We know that there is still a lot of work to be done, but that this is a step in the right direction. Keep the suggestions coming!

Below are some of the changes you will notice with this update. Please note that these changes only affect the Community.

Our Community is now mobile friendly

If you’ve ever tried to access the Community on your phone before, you will remember how difficult it was to get from one area to the next. Since all the icons were so small, it made it challenging to navigate to the different discussions or respond. Now, you’re experience on your phone will be more like your experience on your computer: easy and care-free.

We’ve increased our search functionalities

We’ve added some new search functionalities so that you can find answers to your questions quicker than ever before. Here are just some examples of how we’ve improved things:

  • The Knowledge Base-The Knowledge Base articles contain Public Mobile approved answers to your questions, and cover a lot of useful information. Since they are so critical for helping Community members, we’ve decided to move them to the forefront. Now, you’ll see these Knowledge Base articles before scrolling to find the latest topics or new solutions. Additionally, we’ve added filters so you can search by Bravos, date, views and comments.
  • Public Lab- Now, our ideas in the Public Lab are sorted by their status so it’s easier to see whether an idea has already been suggested by someone else. We’ve also added functionality so that within each status category you can see which ideas have the most Bravos, and which ideas have been posted most recently. To do this, just click on ‘New Ideas’ or ‘Top Ideas’ on the top left hand side of the page and the ideas will automatically be filtered for you.

Sharing information got a lot easier

Last but not least, we’ve made some changes to how you can share information. To make it even easier, we’ve added ‘Share’ and ‘Quote’ features which can be used when you are responding to a thread on the Community.

  • Sharing- When you find a Public Lab idea or a Knowledge Base article you want to share with your friends, just click the share button at the bottom of the postand you will have the option to share that thread via all sorts of different social channels. These channels include Facebook, Twitter and email, just to name a few.
  • Quoting- Really like what someone else said? So much so that you couldn’t have said it any better yourself? Well, now you will be able to quote what another Community member has said. We thought this might come in handy when someone posts a question that already has an answer somewhere else on the Community. Rather than re-writing the solution, you can quickly quote the solution that has already been provided. This feature can also be used to respond to specific text in a post. By quoting the question you are answering, you will help decrease confusion by providing context about what you are replying to.

@Brooke_C I just edited my first post from mobile without needing to request the desktop site first! It's funny how the small things can be so meaningful, as this was a big pain on the old mobile version of the community. 🙂

I think everyone does but we are willing to give it a chance. People are generally resistant to change. I think right now, the white spaces is what bothers me most.

I know they're not using bootstrap but all I see is div col-md-8 followed by div col-md-4 everywhere with too many br and p tags; and jumbotron on the main page. IMO, Lots of wasted space.

I think it was a lot easier to navigate and find useful and important info and links in the old look (both computer and mobile).

I agree. I noticed, I visit the community less often since the new layout.

The community pages are a nice refresh but somewhat washed out with all the white.

Maybe adding a very, very slight colour within the message boxes will add some needed contrast.

Hello, I am new here. I am on desktop and agree with the white space. It does not seems so navigation friendly. Seems like people like the old design better eh

Alot of people (incl myself) have commented about the white space

I'd point out to powers that be most mobile phones don't use white backgrounds because of battery drain

Most default to darker colours

Just sayin

This may be an improvement on mobile, but personally on desktop the forum seems much harder to navigate with so much white space.

Just tried this on my phone. There's too much wasted space between the tag and Reply button, but otherwise it's generally a better UX.

Looks much more modern. Nicely done.

It is confusing if in the latet posts all you see is the same post but looks a lot different

I like the new look. However I can't seem to see if I'm logged in or not, like how it was before. That's probably the one thing that popped in my head immediately when I first saw the front page.

My first reaction was "dear gosh", what have they done?  But to me honest, a lot of that is the unfamiliarity of the new look and once I get used to it, I'll probably be mainly fine with it.

There are 2 things that I can't stand right from the get go though:

1.  At least in the desktop version of the site, there is now what seems to me to much wasted space, too many graphical "niceties" that distract from the actual content that causes much more scrolling, making it take longer to glance through messages.  I'm sure there's a logical reason for the all the wasted white space, and unfortunately, the only one that I can think of isn't a good thing for the customer.  I hope Public doesn't start filling the space with ads.

2.  For the new message indicator:  Forums with no new messages are in regular black type of threads of new messages are in a barely bolded grey?  Really!???  It's visually not very easy to tell the difference when the difference in color is so small. You now have to look closely.

I don't mind the new look and typekit fonts but all this extra whitespace on large screens seems like a waste. There a lot more scrolling required.

Just noticed a very minor issue (non-issue?): Apparently, smileys currently don't function properly in the Public Lab forum, even though they are available in the editor.

Test to see if they work here in the regular forums:  Cat Happy Robot Happy Smiley Happy

Looks good!

looking forward to more surprises

@Brooke_C  I have also noticed now that when you click a link within a thread it doesn't open a new tab/window anymore.  Actually I will have to check on my Firefox browser as it might just be my setting but I thought it was opening new tabs whenever a link was clicked before.

ETA:  It did open a new tab if it was to an outside site.  My bad
